One of the best things about Abacus is the community it has built. As a family, we are proud to tell others that our children attend the school as it's well known that children who go through Abacus and the ESF system as a whole are really wonderful, caring and bright. The themes around how to structure learning throughout the school year are really well thought out, especially for the age that Abacus looks after. Learning through play is so important for children especially in Hong Kong and this generation when parents can fall down the slippery slope of over-scheduling. I know that if my children did nothing else outside of school they would be incredibly fulfilled because of the learning environment built by Abacus.
One of the best things about Abacus is the community it has built. Before applying to Abacus we were told what a beautiful community it was, but it was not until our son joined the school that we could quite grasp the extent of this community and the supportive, nurturing, inclusive nature that it harbours. What's New at Abacus?
Here are some of the Little Snails class learning together on their recent Forest School day. As they explored the garden to find bugs and practised their woodwork skills (and resilience) they showed themselves to be risk takers and inquirers. #EarlyPYP #forestschool
All the children have really enjoyed learning more about the Dragon Boat Festival, making dumplings, sharing stories and putting their dragon boat constructions to the test! The rain added authenticity to the K2 children's dragon boat race.
Inspired after reading Kath Murdoch's "The Wonder of Winsome" (2021) our K2s have been taking home a class book of wonders to add in their questions with their families. These books have led to rich conversations and are a valuable opportunity for the children to see that sometimes not knowing and just being curious is okay. #earlyinquirers #kjinquiry #kathmurdoch
The K2s were so excited and determined this week as they experienced more Forest School learning. The children practised their woodwork skills and began building a bug hotel. K2 were risk takers as they had their first go at slack lining at school too. #outdoorlearning #PYP
The K2 children were so excited to welcome their families to school this week to celebrate their learning in their latest inqiury into How The World Works. There were experiments, bridge building, a chance to research and shared reflection on the children's progress.
The K1s develop their skills with using tools safely by hammering leaves to create art. The garden is full of laughter and rhythmic hammering!
Another beautiful day at Abacus and the K1 classes build their understanding of their latest inquiry into Sharing The Planet in our garden. The children tiptoe around to look for minibeasts. They stretch their bodies and calm themselves with some yoga.
Our K2 English class are practising using tools safely in their Forest School learning today. It will be interesting to see how the children choose to use their newly created "geoboards" in the classroom. #forestschool #outdoorlearning
A day filled with colour and laughter as the children learned about the Hindu festival of Holi. They have explored this celebration through stories, pictures and play with the multicoloured gulal. We hope that those members of our community who celebrated Holi last week had a wonderful time.
