This is in addition to the contact days with children. These CPD days are added onto our calendar not removed from the contact days with children.

Please find the school calendar for Abacus Calendar for 2018-2019  here.

Welcome Back

Happy New Year and welcome back to Abacus. We hope you all had a restful holiday and are ready for a great term.

Congratulations and Goodbye

Huge congratulations to Danielle Evans our K2 Bilingual class teacher and her partner Tom who are expecting a baby just after Easter this year. We wish you the best of luck for the remaining time of your pregnancy and for the safe arrival of the new baby.

Sadly, this means we will not have Danielle as a class teacher for Term 3 this year. We are in the process of recruiting for a maternity cover teacher for this term. We will keep you posted.

Congratulations also to Suyi Chen who will leave Abacus after Chinese New Year to take up a Chinese teaching position at Peak School. We wish you all the best for your new role. We will also be advertising for a replacement EA for Suyi this week.

Theatre Show

This Friday is our whole school theatre show to see ‘The Bear Hunt’ at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Wanchai. Please arrange make your own way to the theatre. If you can’t remember how many tickets you ordered please contact the office.

The performance begins at 9.45 am but we would ask that families arrive for 9.15am in order to register with their class teachers. We do not give out tickets before hand for this performance as the theatre like to seat us in groups. Therefore, please arrive by 9.15 am, register with your class teacher and line up with the class. Once all members of the class have arrived the teacher will take you up to the theatre and the theatre staff will seat you. Please follow their instructions and sit together as a class.

Children may wear their own clothes to the performance. The performance will last for about 1 hour, following this the teachers will return to school to conduct new K1 play visits. Please note there is no school on this day am or pm for children who decided not to attend the theatre show.

Fiona and Frances will not be attending the show as they will be remaining at school to conduct additional K1 play visits in the morning.

Bunnies

Thank you to the families who took care of our bunnies during the holidays. The bunnies came to us as rescue bunnies from a family who were relocating last summer. It has been a fantastic experience for the children to observe the bunnies and learn how to care for them for the past term. We think however, that as they get older they may be happier in a quieter home environment rather than at school. If anyone has space and would be interested in taking the bunnies on permanently please let the office know. They don’t need a huge amount of care, however, they do need to have a space to run around in each day, a garden would be amazing for them. Ours are loose in the classroom before and after school. Please note we know the bunnies are not very happy around dogs, therefore if you already own a dog this may not be the best environment for them.

Recruitment

We have conducted a recruitment process for our Vice Principal position at last term. A panel of teachers, parents and ESF senior management interviewed the final 3 candidates. The successful candidate was Suzanne Carrigan. Suzanne is an experienced Early Years teacher, she is currently Head of Early Years at Discovery Bay International School and a Forest Schools Leader, we hope she will bring her great experience and some new ideas to the Abacus leadership team.
