Although we are not governed by the statutory holidays for schools, we follow the ESF schools calendar. During every year we have 5 teacher training days built into the calendar. This is in addition to the contact days with children. These CPD days are added onto our calendar not removed from the contact days with children.

Please find the school calendar for Abacus Calendar for 2018-2019  here.

Final Message

This is the final newsletter for this year, the year seems to have flown by and I cannot believe we already so close to the summer break. It has been lovely to be part of such a happy Abacus community this year and always sad to say goodbye to our K2 children as they begin their next adventure. It is particularly sad to be saying goodbye to some of our families whose youngest child is now finishing. It will be very strange when we don’t see such familiar faces around next year.  We would like to thank all of our parents for your support and contributions to Abacus.

K2 debentures will be returned within 2 months to the same account which your school fees are paid from.

Please remember if you still have a library book at home these need to be returned as soon as possible.

We will also be collecting the old blue uniform from anyone who would like to donate their old uniform. This will be sent to a charitable organisation who will donate it to children in need.

We hope you all have a lovely, relaxing summer break and look forward to seeing our K1 families back in August. The calendar for next year can be found here.

End of Year Reports

I have been made aware that there was a problem with the reports not printing correctly. I believe this has now been fixed by our IT department. Please can you go ahead and check your child’s report on Moodle. If your child has been here for the full year you should have the following sections:

  • Personal and Social comment
  • Language comment
  • Maths comment
  • 4 x unit of inquiry comments from throughout the year

If any of these sections are missing please let us know before Friday. You should be able to print the report as a more formal pdf with your child’s picture and the school logo on the front using the print button.

We would be grateful if you could check the report thoroughly and let us know if there are any typos or mistakes. They have been proof read but occasionally things slip past us or sections are copied across to the wrong section. It is much easier for us to check and fix these issues before thre reports are archived over the summer.

Staff Placements 2018/19

As you will be aware our K2 part time EA Julie Rose is leaving at the end of the year to return to the UK and Allison Banbury is also leaving to take up her new Principal’s position.

As a result of Principal’s appointment being made so late in the year we have decided to promote internally for the Vice Principal’s role on a 1 year temporary basis. We opened up applications internally and Fiona Hall successfully interviewed to fill the temporary vacancy. Her vacated teaching role will be filled by Hannah Smith, also for 1 year. Hannah has been working with us already and holds an initial degree and a PGCE in Early Childhood Education both from UK universities. We also have two new Educational Assistants joining us, Penny Loveridge and Maria Lee.

We will go through a full recruitment round during the school year next year to appoint on a more permanent basis.

As a result these will be our staff class placements for next year:

K1 English Class – Olivia Kane, Michelle Chan and Sue Tyson/ Penny Loveridge

K1 Bilingual Class – Hannah Smith, Allison Fung and Maria Lee

K2 English Class – Olivia Kotyck, Anita Jims and Jackie Henderson

K2 Bilingual Class – Danielle Evans, Susanne Liu and Bridgette Walker

Story Sharing

The K2 children had their story sharing day on Friday. It was amazing to see the progress the children had made with their writing and story telling skills. The confidence and enjoyment from the children was a pleasure to see. We hope all of the parents enjoyed seeing their children’s fantastic achievements.

You can find the photos from the day here.

Summer Camp and Summer School

We still have a few places left in our summer camp and summer school if you are interested in enrolling your child please contact the office. The summer camp is a 3 hour morning session for 3-6 year olds and is  unaccompanied. The children will engage in a variety of exciting activities including water play in the paddling pools and creative activities.

The playgroup is a 2 hour session and children need to be accompanied by a parent or helper for this session. Again the children will be offered lots of exciting and educational activities to keep them active and busy over the holidays.

Bunnies

Snowy is at home at the moment. As she has an outdoor cage we think it is just too hot for her outside. However, today we had some new arrivals. their family is relocating and they are looking for a new home or they were going to the SPCA. We would prefer them to stay together as they have always been together and they come with everything they need. If anyone is interested in adopting them either temporarily over the summer or more permanently please let us know. Meet Fluffy and Aspen. They are currently residing in Bunnies class if anyone would like to come and say hi.
